Agency to name Athens' unknown soldiers buried at Ridges cemetery

Gravestones will be added this Saturday to the resting place of 42 Civil War veterans buried in a cemetery at The Ridges.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has supplied 42 gravestones for the soldiers known as The Asylum Civil War veterans. The graves are marked with only a number or no marker at all.

The veterans are from many Southeast Ohio counties including Athens. Most of the veterans fought for the Union, but one served in the Confederate Army and two served with the United States Colored Infantry, according to a release from the Friends of the Athens Asylum Cemeteries.

The event will start at 9 a.m. in the Tower Cemetery at The Ridges. Each gravestone will contain the veteran’s name, rank, unit, and years of birth and death. The installation is sponsored by the Athens County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Friends of the Athens Asylum Cemeteries, and the Logan Monument Company.
