Margaritas, music and a message will be present at Casa Neuva tonight as the Books for Prisoners benefit raises money to provide a “education and an escape” for convicts.
Athens Books to Prisoners is an organization that provides books for prisoners in Ohio. In jail, the convicts rarely have a chance to receive education through books or educational programs. Books to Prisoners believes that through sending requested books they can promote education and “individual growth” within the prisons.
Local musicians Mike Elliot, Queen Bee and the Honey Don’ts, Chris Munday, Octopus and Owl, and 150 Cent are on the lineup to play at the event.
Casa Neuva human resources coordinator and Books for Prisoners member Sarah Fick hopes the night will both be a great time for participants and will raise funds for the fledgling organization.
“If you’re in prison there’s nothing you can do,” Fick said. “They don’t have a way to make money, they don’t have a way to get books on their own, they don’t have a way to do anything. It’s kind of helping out the person in the greatest need.”
The event will raise money through donations. All money donated will go directly to pay for book postage.
