High School Football: Nelsonville-York moves to 6-0

The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes had a little extra incentive to take care of things early in their game against the Wellston Golden Rockets Friday.

Their homecoming dance was scheduled for right after their game.

To avoid rushing to the school cafeteria to dance the night away with their dates, the players   decided to rush and throw on the football field to secure yet another blowout victory.

The Buckeyes captured a 48-0 victory against the Golden Rockets to move their overall record to 6-0 and to capture their first Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division win.

Though it was a bit chilly, the conditions did not hamper the Buckeyes’ offense as it did last week.

Nathan Dean and his receiving corps established a better rhythm to bury Wellston.

The senior quarterback was accurate and efficient, throwing for 219 yards and three touchdowns on 17-of-22 passing. Dean's favorite target was fellow senior Daniel Kline, who finished with five receptions for 75 yards a touchdown.

"Last week, I think Nate threw the ball real well but we couldn’t hang on to the football as well as we’d hoped to," coach Dave Boston said. "I think we capitalized on Nate’s great arm.”

Even though Wellston did a good job stopping the run, Buckeyes running back Dustin Young still racked up triple digits on the ground. Young finished with 108 yards on 20 carries and a pair of rushing touchdowns.

In addition to putting together another explosive offensive night, Nelsonville-York also had another brilliant defensive performance. The Buckeyes are allowing just more than six points per game and have pitched two shutouts.

"Our defense certainly is a big key," Boston said after his team held Wellston's Jaylen Prater, a Division-I player orally committed to Northwestern, to fewer than 100 yards rushing.

"You win championships with great defenses."

The Buckeyes will look to continue their perfect season next Friday as they take on Meigs High School in their first road game in TVC-Ohio play. Meigs lost to Athens High School 56-9 Friday.
