Outdoor Pursuits hosts trips for stranded students

Climbing cliffs, flying down a river rapid, and gazing at the stars are not just adventures true explorers have.

The Outdoor Pursuits program was created in 1996. The on-campus program is open for anyone.

“Anyone can sign up not just students, staff members, community members, family members, anyone can participate,” Daneil Vorisek, director of Outdoor Pursuits, said.

The program supplies different trips, courses, training, and rents out equipment for those who need them. Trips include rope courses, rock climbing, camping, white water rafting, stargazing, hiking, and various other activities.

“One of our most poplar trips is the ropes course because so many different people, clubs, groups, and teams use it for so many different reasons,” Vorisek said.

The goal of the program is to help students get off campus, outside, and enjoy nature at its best.

“It is so important for students to get engaged outside of classes. It helps students build relationships with each other and nature. It allows them to grow, learn about themselves and others, and it lets them gain new perspective,” Vorisek said.

The program is funded through student fees and charges for big journeys like white water rafting.

“We try to make sure we stay affordable for students. The program is about the experience not the money,” Vorisek said.

The crew is entirely staffed by students and hosts events year round, including maintaining the rock wall at ping.

Prices very depending on the event and those interested can sign up online or at Ping Center.
