Tonight, a Harvard-educated history professor will argue that the history of wars and military interventions in the United States do not contradict historical perspectives of the country’s peaceful development.
Ohio University’s history department will host Fred Anderson, a history professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Anderson will speak about America’s numerous military engagements in the past centuries and how they affect perceptions of the country today.
The Revolutionary War, the Civil War and World War II are three of the most studied wars in American history, but Anderson’s lecture will focus on the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Spanish-American War, the Indian wars, the Korean and Vietnam wars and other military interventions in Latin America, the Middle East and South Asia, according to a news release.
“Anderson’s lecture will suggest an alternative framework within which these numerous conflicts appear not as exceptions to the rule of a peaceful national development, but rather as evidence of a powerful, enduring imperial strand in the fabric of American history,” states the release.
Anderson has studied and taught at Harvard University and is the author of several books addressing U.S. history and war. He will speak at 7:30 tonight in Baker Center Theater.
