The Appalachian Ohio Group of the Sierra Club will celebrate the work of Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai Thursday with a free showing of Taking Root.
The film is free and open to the public and will play at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Athens Community Center, Room C.
Maathai’s story is based on the founding of the Green Belt movement in Kenya that taught the benefits of environmental sustainability through planting trees and fighting political corruption.
“In the face of adversity in Southeast Ohio, with our state parks and private lands under threat of hydraulic fracturing, Athens community members and Ohio University students are encouraged to join the Appalachian Ohio Group in honoring a woman who spoke for communities, social justice, a just political system, and reforesting the country of Kenya,” a Sierra Club news release states.
After the showing, there will be a general discussion regarding the threat of hydraulic fracturing in Southeast Ohio.
Village Bakery & Café will supply cookies, but attendees are encouraged to bring desserts.
