Sorority sponsors cultural food event

Different cultures across the globe will be showcased tonight through samples of international cuisine at the Cultural Food Throwdown.

The event, sponsored by the Zeta Gamma chapter of the multicultural sorority Sigma Lambda Gamma, is in light of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

The event will feature cultural foods from populations represented at Ohio University. Attendees are encouraged to bring one of their favorite dishes.

Sigma Lambda Gamma President Erika Rodriguez said the sorority decided to host the Cultural Food Throwdown because it seemed like a fun way to inform people about different nationalities on campus.

“I hope people definitely come out with a new sense of the different cultures and come together for one common activity—to eat,” Rodriguez said. “The Cultural Food Throwdown will show how diverse and proud we are on campus.”

A faculty member will judge the dishes. The winner will receive a dinner for two at Casa Nueva.

Sigma Lambda Gamma plans to have dishes ranging from Puerto Rican rice and beans to Swedish meatballs.

The Office for Diversity, Access and Equity has made arrangements to order food from Baker Center to help supplement the multicultural cuisine.

“We hope the Cultural Food Throwdown will put out a good name for us and help share diverse cultures,” Rodriguez said.
