Students smoked out by South Green fire

Students were evacuated from a South Green residence hall early this morning when a fire filled the first floor with smoke.

Residents of True House, 132 South Green Dr., were shepherded to nearby Atkinson House at about 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Athens Fire Department and Ohio University Police Department arrived at the scene and began clearing the floor of smoke. Athens Fire Capt. George Klinger said a chair had caught on fire in the communal area of a mod.

"There's a lot of smoke in there," Klinger said. "… There's going to be smoke damage for individual rooms."

Everyone was evacuated safely and without injury, Klinger said. An investigation into the fire's cause will begin this morning.

The fire is still under investigation, said Ohio University Police Department Chief Andrew Powers.

"We don’t have an official ruling yet," Powers said. "I’ve got investigators down there working at the scene right now. (There will be a report) as soon as we have something to report."
