Weekend 'no more rowdy' than past

Though Homecoming is traditionally a rowdy weekend for Athens police, there were no surprises when Ohio University alumni flooded Uptown restaurants and bars before, during and after Saturday’s parade.

The Athens City Police Department received a combined 57 calls for service during Saturday and Sunday’s first shifts, which begin at 11 p.m. of the previous day and run into the morning hours.

Saturday night’s call total was “fewer than expected,” according to an APD release.

There were three reported assaults on both Friday and Saturday night, all three of which are currently under investigation.

Also among the calls were 11 noise complaints on both Friday and Saturday night as well, many of which were not in violation when officers arrived.

In comparison to past homecoming weekends, APD Lieutenant Adam Claar said the festivities brought nothing out of the ordinary.

“It was a steady weekend,” Claar said. “Homecoming is always rowdier than usual … (but) it was no more rowdy than others.”
