Among the many ways veterans will be honored on Veteran’s Day, Athens High School will perform A Piece of My Heart, a show about 26 American women serving in Vietnam.
The show, directed by Carol Patterson, is based off of a book of the same name by Keith Walker. Both the play and book show the different story of characters before, during and after the war.
At the end of the show, each character meets at the Vietnam Memorial Wall. The artist who designed the wall, Maya Lin, is an alumnus of Athens High School, and the show is also dedicated to her.
Patterson said she chose the show as a “great vehicle for teaching acting as well as the importance of our veterans and veterans' day.” She looked for actors that could handle the “sincerity” and “commitment” the piece requires.
The show will have a special performance tonight at 6:30 for veterans in the area beginning with a reception followed by a special preview of the show. After the preview, the veterans may come up and speak with the students, something Patterson said the students are anxious and excited about.
The show will run from Nov. 11-13 and veterans may attend free of charge throughout the entire performance run.
