Christian clubs to commingle for first time

Campus Crusade for Christ, Reach Out on Campus and Young Life are just a few of the Christian organizations on campus at Ohio University, but each group has its own agenda and planned events.

For the first time, though, these groups, along with several other ministries in the Athens area, will come together for Point B, a night filled with praise and worship.

Matt LoPresti, a junior studying marketing and managing information systems, first had the idea when he participated in Point B as a high-school student in his hometown of Pittsburgh. When he left Reach Out to join Campus Crusade, he said he felt odd being separated from the group.

“I was a part of Reach Out before I became a part of (Campus Crusade), and when I switched, it felt weird being segregated,” LoPresti said. “This is to unite all the groups, and the whole community of Athens, under one banner for a night.”

Albany Baptist Church in Albany will host the event. Stephen Wintle, interim senior pastor at Albany Baptist, said the church was happy to be involved because Point B fosters a healthy environment for those looking to improve their relationships with God.

“We, as a church, wanted to be involved in this event because we want to show our college students we care about them as individuals,” Wintle said. “We desire to see college students, through this event, grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.”

Taylor Pool, a junior studying journalism, said the evening does not yet have a set game plan but will include a speech by Point B’s founder Mike Williams.

Although the event mainly targets Christians, it will be a good experience for people looking to develop their relationships with God, said Josh Frash, a sophomore studying chemical engineering.

“If they are a Christian, it’s a great place to worship, but it’s also a good experience for those who want to encounter God with the help of music and worship,” Frash said. “The name ‘Point B’ is intended to mean the move from point a in a relationship with Christ to point B, where you can re-dedicate your relationship to God.”
