GSS, Off-Campus Living to shuttle students to Farmers Market today

University wheels are taking students to State Street today.

Today, Graduate Student Senate and Residential Housing’s Off-Campus Living office are providing a van to students who wish to visit the Athens Farmers Market.

The van will depart at 11:45 a.m. today from Christ the King Church, on the corner of Stewart and Mill streets.

GSS recently passed a resolution encouraging the university to provide transportation to the market.

“The Farmers Market is such an opportunity to see sustainable agriculture, organic and locally produced foods,” GSS President Tracy Kelly said. “There are businesses (that students) might not realize are there.”

The Office of Sustainability will also provide students with sustainable tote bags, Kelly said.

GSS is not paying Off-Campus Living for the driving arrangements, Kelly said.

The vendors at the market will include Casa Nueva, Crumbs Bakery, Cantrell Honey and Candles, Herbal Sage Tea and Silver Bridge Coffee.

“I think this is something really healthy and sustainable that will be positive for both students and the community,” Kelly said.
