OU student calls on 'flying spaghetti monster' as religious demonstrators set up by Baker

Today demonstrators from the nondenominational fellowship Remnant took to the sidewalks outside Baker University Center to preach to passing students.

Robert Warner, a representative from Remnant, said the purpose is to spread the truth of the Messiah to students and to educate them on the realities of heaven and hell.

“I’m just being honest here,” Warner said. “No heavy-duty thing except for the truth.”

Warner said the members of the group stationed themselves outside Baker and Scripps Hall shortly after 11:30 a.m. and plan to remain outside most of the afternoon.

“We’ve been doing this for some time,” Warner said. “(The people here) are younger in that they haven’t signed up for everything they believe in. It’s good to catch them before they sign out.”

Accompanying the protestors was Jacob Chaffin, an Ohio University junior studying education. Chaffin held a sign that read, “Turn to the flying spaghetti monster.”

He said the spaghetti monster is a mock religious figure created when some educational institutions opted to include creationism in science curriculum.

“I don’t like it when people try to tell me what to do with my soul,” Chaffin said. “Free speech, that’s fine. But I’m going to mock it.”
