A junior Ohio University student was pronounced dead at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital this morning, after Athens police responded to a call around 3:00 this morning.
In the early morning hours, Athens police were “summoned” to a residence on Grosvenor Street in reference to an unresponsive female, 21-year-old Yaara Mashmoor.
ACEMS transported Mashmoor to the emergency room at O’Bleness, where she was later prounounced dead, according to an APD news release.
APD does not think there is a threat to public safety in relation to the death, APD Chief Tom Pyle said.
"This is an unequivocal death investigation," Pyle said. "We wouldn't rule anything out, but nothing presents itself at this point that would suggest foul play."
Adetunji Adedipe, a second-year graduate student studying political science, knew Mashmoor for years and said he was shocked by her death. Adedipe and Mashmoor went to school together in Orange, Ohio, before both attending OU.
"She was the definition of a friend," Adedipe said. "I don't think I can name anybody who didn't like her. She was just a good person."
Mashmoor's family is in Athens but did not want to comment.
"I was saddened to learn of Yaara's passing this morning,” said Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi in an statement from OU. “On behalf of Ohio University, I extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends. I know the fond memories we have of her will help us all through this difficult time."
Mashmoor, a Pepper Pike, Ohio, native was studying psychology.
The APD is still investigating the cause of death.
