U.S. Postal Service asking for Athens' stamp in removal of operations

Because of a “deep decline” in mail volume, the U.S. Postal Service will hold a public meeting at Athens High School later this month to discuss a proposal to move Athens mail processing operations to Columbus.

The proposal would move operations from the Athens Customer Service Mail Processing Center, 5 W. Stimson Ave., to the Columbus Processing and Distribution Center. The proposal comes after the announced proposal in late September to cut 35,000 U.S. Postal Service jobs.

“With the deep decline in mail volume due to current economic conditions and continuing electronic diversion, the Postal Service has an excess of employees and equipment in some mail-processing operations,” a service news release states. “A study was begun on Sept. 15 at Athens to determine the feasibility of consolidating redundant operations to see if any efficiencies and cost-savings would be achieved.”

According to the study, initial results support the consolidation of the operations in Athens.

A public meeting will be held at 7 p.m Nov. 21 in the Athens High School Auditorium, 1 High School Rd., The Plains.
