600lbs of Sin returns for round 2

After rocking the house at Casa Nueva last Halloween, a West Virginia band decided it wanted another taste of the Athens music culture.

The band, 600lbs of Sin, decided to return to the restaurant and cantina Friday.

“It wasn’t a hard decision to come back and play in Athens,” said Mike Pushkin, the band’s guitarist. “We love playing in Athens and we always enjoy playing there.”

Tim Peacock, the restaurant’s booking agent, said the feeling was mutual.

“Casa loves 600lbs of Sin,” he said. ”They are a great band and we are thrilled that they are coming back.”

Pushkin and fellow guitarist Josh Thomas started the group as The Filthy No ’Counts, after a wedding gig. When the duo accepted three more members, vocalist Sierra Ferrell, bass player Jon Lavigne and drummer Billy Thomas, they became known as 600lbs of Sin.

‘It just went really well,” Pushkin said. “People just loved it.”

The band is known for its versatile folk sound inspired by a variety of artists such as Bob Dylan, ACDC, Johnny Cash, The Beatles and The Black Eyed Peas.

“We all listen to different things,” Pushkin said. “As a result, we can produce a really good sound.”

The crew has traveled across the country this year, featured at venues including West Virginia’s Sunshine Daydream Music Park and Pennsylvania’s Flood City Music Festival.

“We’ve just had a pretty good year,” Pushkin said. “We’ve worked hard for it.”

The group’s sound can be best described as a combination of Fleetwood Mac, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, said Chris Morris, the band’s promotions and marketing manager, in an email.

“They have become the area’s most popular band,” Morris said in the email. “I’ve seen some killer crowds.”

The band will return to Casa Friday at 10:30 p.m. The cover charge is $5 for all ages. For more information about the band visit its website at www.600lbsofsin.com.
