Artist debuts 'invigorating' stories, songs

Nashville, nicknamed the Music City, is a city where dreams can either come true or be consumed by a sea of competition.

David Story decided to take the dive into the Nashville music scene this past December and said he has not regretted his decision.

“It wasn’t a move I ever intended to make,” Story said. “The idea of getting swallowed in the sea of talented musicians in Nashville was always enough to scare me away. But after getting a lot of encouragement from folks in the industry here, I decided it was time to finally give it a go. It’s a little terrifying, but mostly invigorating, to pour myself into my music.”

Story will perform Thursday in The Front Room as part of the Emerging Artist Series.

“I was only here briefly a year ago, but I could tell that Athens is something of a hidden gem,” he said. “And I’m especially looking forward to catching up with friends I made here and making some new ones.”

Along with some of his older songs, Story will perform his latest single “Second Great War,” and he will also debut some songs he wrote last week.

“In the past, I would never pick out a set list,” he said. “I might decide on the first few songs and the last few songs before I take the stage. But recently I’ve been trying to put a more cohesive show together.”

Story said he hopes his music will reach the audience and will be relatable to them in one way or another.

“This being my first performance at Ohio University, my songs will be brand new to most, if not everyone at the show,” he said. “I like to think that my music has significance and depth, that it carries weight. I tell a lot of stories with my songs, some true, some fictional. And if you take the time to listen, the songs will take you somewhere.”
