Blue Pencil Comedy troupe draws laughter with CDs

Thanks to Blue Pencil Comedy’s new CD, people everywhere can now carry a few laughs in their pockets.

“Well, I really like the group, and I think that they have a lot of really funny people that bring up a lot of issues through their jokes,” said Hannah Dunn, a junior studying women’s history. “I bought the CD to listen to the comedians at Blue Pencil and support them and their cause.”

Max Cothrel, public-relations officer for Blue Pencil Comedy, said the group has been considering creating a collection of its material and just recently decided to put the disc together.

“It’s obviously a nice fundraiser, but it’s a nice way for us to promote Blue Pencil and our comedians,” Cothrel said. “The whole point of comedy is to make people laugh, and this way, we can do that even when we don’t have a show.”

The CD contains 15 tracks totaling 30 minutes and features nine Blue Pencil comedians spewing out jokes about drinking, dating and various other topics.

“The cool thing about it is that no disc has the same cover,” Cothrel said. “It’s a little bit fancy. Not one person has the same case.”

The troupe has sold 16 CDs so far and has made a profit of $16, said Eudora Peterson, president of Blue Pencil Comedy.

“So far, it’s gone a lot better than we anticipated,” Peterson said. “We weren’t sure if people would pay for a comedy CD, but they did. People are willing to buy it.”

Cothrel said the troupe is planning to make more CDs and distribute them during their shows every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at The Athens’ Pyramids, GG’s Bubble Tea and The Front Room, respectively.

“(The first CD) is just what we had the time to get done,” Cothrel said. “We intend to keep making these and continue to sell them at our shows.”
