Burger grease smoke causes Baker evacuation

Baker University Center was evacuated at about 11:15 a.m. today after smoke from burger grease in the food court set off the emergency alarm.

Two fire trucks responded to the alarm.

Students gathered across the street from the first floor and fourth floor of the building as they waited to go back inside.

People were allowed back into the building about 30 minutes after it was evacuated.

“The food court will be reopening soon,” said Sujit Chemburkar, executive director of Baker Center and Event Services, soon before the doors were reopened. “We had the building empty in less than four minutes.”
