Cabin Fever Festival features 6 acts, music swap

Various Ohio musicians will rock Nelsonville’s Stuart’s Opera House during the third annual Cabin Fever Festival Saturday night.

Six acts will headline at the festival: J.D. Hutchinson, Sportfishing USA, Lydia Loveless, The Sundresses, Nick Tolford & Company and Buffalo Killers. Each act has the flexibility to appeal to certain musical tastes but Brian Koscho, marketing and promotions coordinator for the Opera House, said all are great musicians so anybody can enjoy them.

Live music will begin at 6 p.m., preceded by a 1 p.m. Music Swap Meet and Sale in the lobby. The swap will feature vendors selling records, tapes, instruments and more.

Many of the acts, such as Lydia Loveless and Sportfishing USA, feature hints of folk rock.

Although Buffalo Killers’ roots are in rock ‘n’ roll, their style is punctuated by tinges of psychedelia, country and folk — which aligns the group with the other acts, said the band’s Zachary Gabbard.

“Our writing is very organic, so each song is influenced by the day, season of our life or position of the moon,” Gabbard said.

The Sundresses, also highlighted at Saturday’s festival, is noted for popularizing the concept of a “living record.”

A “living record” allows a listener to purchase access to the band’s record and additional content online, said Jeremy Springer, a member of the band.

“It’s an idea of new material and a new way of selling music to fans and having them become interactive in the process continuously for the rest of their life,” Springer said.

Many acts featured at the festival have played shows in Athens County before, including Lydia Loveless, who visited last fall.

And she’s excited to be back.

“I definitely have a lot of fans (in Athens) and I don’t get down there much,” Loveless said. “I’m excited about… hopefully having a larger crowd than last time.”

With all the talented acts this year, Koscho says he hopes more people will come out to Nelsonville Saturday.

“It’s a great chance to see a show at the Opera House and each year I always talk to quite a few people who made it their first visit, but not their last, hopefully,” Koscho said.
