The Athens Fire Department responded to a call of a gas leak at 74 ½ N. High St. at about 4:35 p.m. on Monday.
The fire department and the Athens Police Department closed off parts of Carpenter and N. High St and evacuated a house next to the leaking gas line which was exposed, just below the meter.
Columbia Gas responded soon after and assessed the situation, deeming it to be safe.
The streets were reopened around 5:30.
