Ohio's Harris, Central Michigan players face two-game suspensions

Updated: 6:16 p.m.

The Mid-American Conference announced a two-game suspension for the four women's basketball players involved in the altercation, which occured Wednesday.

As previously announced, Ohio's Porsha Harris will sit out two games — Ohio's next two contests against Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan.

The Chippewas' Jas'Mine Bracey, Crystal Bradford and Jessica Green will ride the pine for Central Michigan's next pair of games against Bowling Green and Miami.

Ohio Director of Athletics Jim Schaus was not pleased with Harris' suspension.

“We accept and agree with the game suspensions resulting from this unfortunate incident,” he said.  “We will diligently work with our student-athletes to learn from this experience and ensure it does not occur in the future."

MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher issued a statement as well.

“The behavior of the involved student-athletes was unacceptable and has no place in basketball,” he said. “I appreciate the quick action of the coaches from both institutions who prevented this incident from further escalating.”

Ohio's Porsha Harris will face a two-game suspension for her part in Wednesday night's altercation during the Bobcats' game against Central Michigan.

Jas'Mine Bracey and two other Chippewas will also sit out for at least two games, but the entirety of their suspensions has yet to be determined.

Ohio head coach Semeka Randall issued a statement regarding the incident.

“On behalf of the women’s basketball program at Ohio University, I would like to apologize for the behavior that took place in our Jan. 25 game against Central Michigan," Randall said. "Being the leader of this team it is very disappointing to see one of my players lose composure during a game. Our student-athletes understand that not only do they represent themselves but also the university, the women’s basketball program as a whole and the very team on which they participate.”

Harris and Bracey threw punches at the 11:08 mark of the first half Wednesday night in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Both benches cleared, as fans and coaches tried to end the skirmish.

“It saddens me that we lost our cool in the midst of the game. This is a very serious matter and it will be dealt with," Randall said in the statement. "The league has made its decision and we plan on moving forward from this and preparing for our upcoming game against Western Michigan.”
