Ohio University’s Deputy Police Chief Mark Mathews is on paid administrative leave from the Ohio University Police Department because of an off-duty incident in which he was driving while intoxicated in Athens.
Mathews was not ticketed or charged for the alleged incident, said John Biancamano, OU’s legal counsel. He declined to comment further, saying the investigation is an internal personnel matter.
Mathews received a letter Dec. 9 regarding his paid administrative leave from OU’s chief human resources officer, Linda Lonsinger. The letter referenced an “investigation regarding allegations of inappropriate conduct.”
Mathews’ personnel file contains mostly positive performance reviews, most recently from June 2011.
The file also references a pushing incident between Mathews and another man on Court Street in 1993. It also contains details Mathews provided to OU in 1992 saying he was arrested in Athens for underage consumption in 1989 while he was an OU student; that he used marijuana several times in 1987 and 1988; and that he stole street signs, blinking lights and milk crates in 1987.
