OU med school offering free mammograms today

Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine will offer free mammograms today.

The mammograms will be offered from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. today at OU-HCOM's Free Community Clinic.

Underinsured and non-insured women between the ages of 40–49 are able to attend an educational session as well as receive the check-up.

Women who are at or under the 300 percent poverty level qualify for the free mammograms, said Missy Kemper, assistant director of the Area Health Education Center and Community Health Programs at OU-HCOM.

This measurement applies to families who fall under a specific income level — for instance, a one-person household making less than $30,630 a year is under the 300 percent poverty level, according to taxfoundation.org.

The events are also made possible by OU-HCOM’s Community Health Programs, the Breast and Cervical Cancer Project of Southeast Ohio and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

“We are just trying to get the word out about the importance of the mammogram and trying to reach those women,” Kemper said.

The free mammograms will be offered again next Thursday at OU-HCOM.
