Post Letters: Archie Stanley best fit for county engineer

I am endorsing Archie Stanley for Athens County Engineer in the Democratic Primary on March 6, 2012.

I have been an Athens Township Trustee for 22 years and have had a very good working relationship with Mr. Stanley. He has always worked consistently with the townships on any problems that we have contacted him about to help us solve them in the best possible way.

The past ten years I have been president of the Athens County Township Trustees and Fiscal Officers Association and have observed his constant help the township problems by helping them with equipment problems allowing us to use his contract for salt and snowplow blades.

The first trucks, chainsaws and other equipment and personnel to arrive after the Sept. 16, 2010 tornado in The Plains to help with brush removal was the Athens County Engineers Department, and they continued to help until the roads were all cleared.

He is dedicated public servant to all of Athens County, and I am proud to call him my friend.

Archie deserves your support on Tuesday, March 6, 2012.

William R. (Dick) Shaw is chairman of the Athens Township Trustees.

When I returned to Athens in 1977, one of the first people I met was Archie Stanley. At that time, he was preparing to run for Athens County Engineer. Archie was elected and has now served 32 years in that capacity. During this time, Archie has demonstrated many outstanding qualities that are special especially his devotion to his family, friends and employees. Archie constantly displays a dedication to his political party, veterans groups and local school districts. Major job accomplishments include improving the county’s infrastructure by rebuilding more than 200 bridges and hard surface paving of more than 200 miles of county roads.

Archie’s engineering accomplishments include his cooperative efforts with Ohio University and Hocking College to develop a GPS system which has established new National Geodetic Survey monuments that are part of a system used by surveyors to provide accurate property lines. Also, Archie has helped to bring Athens County into the 21st century through leadership in planning, financing and developing a new state-of-the-art engineer facility in the geographic center of the county. This new facility was built primarily with money from the sale of the old site on East State Street. This project has assisted the Athens area by providing prime development land that has resulted in the establishment of five new businesses, many additional jobs and increased tax revenues. Currently, Archie continues to work toward his major goals of finishing the renovation of all county bridges and hard surface paving of all county roads.

My thanks to Archie Stanley for a job well done and for his leadership and efforts to make Athens County a better place to live. In this primary election, I encourage you to show your support for Archie at the ballot box.

Dave Liggit resides in The Plains.
