At last night's Student Senate meeting, one student organization argued the importance of education reform.
Students for Education Reform aims to “mobilize the next generation of leaders on college campuses to close the achievement gap and ensure an excellent education for all children,” according to its website.
“Teachers should be valued,” said Allie Dyer, one of the presenters for the group and senate's Academic Affairs vice-commissioner. “Being taught is not a right; it’s a privilege. We need to be the best to inspire the next generation.”
One of the initiatives the organization plans to carry out this year is a discussion series, through which the Students for Education Reform will seek to educate the campus on the benefits of education reform.
One topic of discussion is how teachers assess students, Dyer said.
“The assessment is not the means to the end,” she said. “It is not the end to the conversation. It is a start.”
