Swimming: Ohio sweeps competition in senior weekend

After defeating West Virginia on Friday, the Bobcats teamed up with the Mountaineers to sing “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton. Fittingly, Ohio’s seniors logged their final miles in the Aquatic Center in a pair of wins this weekend.

Ohio swept its competition during Senior Weekend and finished the season undefeated at home. On Friday, the Bobcats defeated the Mountaineers 178.5-119.5. Ohio came out firing on all cylinders and won 11 of the 16 events. The Bobcats continued their dominance Saturday with a 189-106 against Ball State.

Senior Annie Donovan said she was pleased with the results from this weekend.

“As a team, we really responded to the challenges we faced this weekend,” she said. “We all knew we were up for a challenge, and the same for West Virginia, so I think that means good things for us.”

Donovan added that the feeling still hasn’t sunk in that her last home dual meet is over.

“I can’t believe I’m not going to be on the pool deck in a swimsuit any more here, but obviously I’m going to remember this one probably more than any of the others,” she said.

Senior Amanda Cecere said the team stepped up to the challenge of two skilled opponents.

“We knew that they were two very tough teams to beat, so we responded,” Cecere said. “We could have responded in two different ways, and I think we responded in a good way.”

Coach Greg Werner said he was happy with his team’s performance, but said the team complained of sluggishness during the Ball State meet.

“Obviously I’m very happy we’re coming away with a win and a lot of the individual performances were very good, but I was hoping that we could have matched the times and the scores that we had (Friday against West Virginia),” Werner said. Werner said the back-to-back meets will benefit the team and staff in the future.

“We’re in a better position now than we were in a week ago,” he said. “We have more information. We have more ideas not only for next week but the championships and beyond.”

The Bobcats will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Xavier and Miami on Friday and Saturday.
