People can help nonprofit organizations in more ways than volunteering, such as by spreading awareness, by donating money or even by attending a concert.
Broken Ring will perform Friday at Jackie O’s Pub and Brewery for Jammin’ for Justice. All proceeds will benefit United Campus Ministry.
“Melissa Wales (executive director of UCM) called and asked if we would play for the benefit,” said Colleen Carow, lead singer of Broken Ring. “We were excited to be asked and said ‘yes’ right away.”
Carow said the benefit supports an organization that she sees as a hub where community groups can continue with their programs.
“What I like about it is that they are a welcome gathering place for anyone, no matter if you have a faith or not,” Carow said. “They support the community, and I think that’s a great thing. I feel like now that we are doing the benefit, I’ll want to get engaged with the program.”
The band’s core members will perform Friday evening, but Carow said the group is excited to incorporate a keyboardist for the first time.
“We’ve always wanted one, and he will be playing some piano and organ sounds in the Americana music we play,” she said. “We started rehearsing with him last month, and I am excited for everyone to hear.”
UCM has a history of hosting a variety of fundraisers, including band benefits, Wales said.
“Last year, we held two at Jackie O’s with Coolville Hot Club and The Porters,” she said.
Wales said all are welcome to enjoy Broken Ring, a local band with a history of supporting community events.
“They will also support Jackie O’s, a wonderful establishment with a strong commitment to local foods and community, and UCM,” she said. “Most of the live music happens late, so this is a chance to unwind early after a long week, hear Broken Ring and support UCM. It’s going to be fun.”
