At 8:10 Tuesday night, the Athens Fire Department responded to a call about a dumpster fire behind 28 Montrose Road.
The dumpster is located at the eastern end of a parking lot accessible from East State Street and Stimson Avenue.
Christian Jolley, a resident of 28 Montrose Rd., called the fire in. Jolley said that when he noticed the fire, it was three or four feet high.
Justin Fraser, an Ohio University student who also lives at 28 Montrose Rd., said the fire could have been caused by a lit cigarette being tossed into the dumpster.
Fraser and Jolley added that they could smell the fire from their house.
Athens Police did not yet have details about the cause of the fire.
