Music of band with mystical roots brings 'feel-good' vibe back to OU

Not only does Kingsfoil help heal Frodo, Sam, Faramir and others in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it is also the name chosen by Jordan Davis, lead singer, and his three band mates for their band.

“We were big Lord of the Rings fans when the books came out,” Davis said. “The success of the movies reinforced that, too. Kingsfoil is a healing plant, and our music is feel-good music, so we sort of played with it.”

Kingsfoil is making its third return to Athens after playing with the Goo Goo Dolls in April 2011 and O.A.R. in October 2011.

Davis said they are excited to return to Athens, and they listed Ohio University as one of their favorite stops during tours.

“We love this school,” Davis said. “Everybody that we meet is interesting, and they are always getting into the music. We’re always having a good time performing here.”

When the band mates are not busy enjoying the brick streets, they are hard at work writing new songs, recording a new album and touring the country.

“We played Summerfest and some other cool fest this past year,” Davis said. “We also went to Austin and played for South By Southwest. And we were actually just in Nashville this January recording for our new album that will be released this summer.”

Davis said they plan to play some old songs from their 2010 self-released LP “On Our Own Together” as well as music from their upcoming album.

“We will also play some new songs that we just wrote so people can get a taste of the new album,” Davis said.

The best part of a performance, Davis said, is when audience members get wrapped up in the music.

“When somebody, even if they don’t know you or your music, is really truly listening, you can tell when they feel it,” he said. “As a performer, that is a shot of adrenaline. It becomes a circle, and you play off each other.”

Davis said he looks forward to seeing new and old faces in the audience and can’t wait to see how the audience reacts to the performance.

“We are going to have a good time,” Davis said. “A lot of people bought albums last time we were here, and we made a lot of friends, so it’d be great to see them all. It’ll be great to meet new people, too. Hopefully we have a big party.”
