Ohio University Students Against Fracking seek GSS support

Housing plans weren’t the only topic of discussion at Monday’s Graduate Student Senate meeting — members tackled hydraulic fracturing as well.

Camille Scott, president of Ohio University Students Against Fracking, gave a presentation to GSS members Monday in an effort to gain their support for the organization’s anti-fracking stance.

Scott spoke to GSS about the potential harms of fracking, including contamination of groundwater, which could lead to severe health problems.

“There have been documented cases of cancer and nervous system damage,” Scott said.

Scott also noted that fracking has caused road damage due to the high amount of traffic involved with transporting tons of water to and from the fracking sites. It takes 1 to 8 million gallons of water to complete each fracking job.

“I’d rather not see Athens or OU authorize fracking on any of our lands,” Scott said.
