Research company suing Cunningham Energy in Athens court

A research company hired by Cunningham Energy has filed a lawsuit against the oil and gas company in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas.

Hawkeye Research Inc., a West Virginia-based oil and gas research company that was hired by Cunningham, filed suit against the company Feb. 3 because of allegedly unpaid dues.

John E. Triplett, Hawkeye Inc.’s lawyer, has not yet filed a response to the complaint.

The Hawkeye Inc. lawsuit was filed only five days after Cunningham filed a lawsuit against the research company in Kanawa County, W.Va., for damages Hawkeye may have caused Cunningham, said Athens attorney John Lavelle.

Cunningham’s attorney and former West Virginia Chief Justice Richard Neely has asked for the lawsuit in Athens to be dismissed because it came after the lawsuit in Kanawa.

Lavelle said this lawsuit will not affect any of his clients’ leases.
