Resolution-filled Faculty Senate meeting to address Q2S concerns

With a resolution-packed meeting, Monday evening’s Faculty Senate will be primarily focused around faculty concerns and the quarters-to-semesters conversion.

Although President Roderick McDavis will not be in attendance, Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit will begin the meeting with a short report and take questions, Faculty Senate Chairman Joe McLaughlin said.

Vice President for Finance and Administration Stephen Golding will give the main presentation of the meeting about fracking.

“A lot of discussion and a lot of faculty are reading things in the paper but want to hear from the administration about what the university’s plans are,” McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin said he has been receiving question if the senate will pass a resolution regarding fracking, so he asked Golding to present more information to senate.

Faculty Senate will vote on a resolution regarding the calendar change that will put senate meetings on a semester track rather than quarters by getting rid of January’s meeting and adding a meeting in December.

Senate will also vote on a resolution adapting the “six-quarter rule” — the idea that faculty members who are not classified as Group I should not teach more than six consecutive quarters without a break — to describe a similar four-semester rule.

McLaughlin said he expects both resolutions to pass.

In addition, three resolutions will be read for the first time tomorrow; all will also deal with Q2S.

The resolutions include credit hour conversions for students able to graduate Spring Quarter under semester requirements, dropping non-attending students — the two-hour rule — and changing the wording and math conversions for the undergraduate catalog requirements for graduation.
