Seth Meyers entertains with stand-up routine

Seth Meyers took to the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium Friday night before a crowd of more than 1,600 people, according to Andrew Holzaepfel, associate director of programming for the Performing Arts & Concert Series.

Meyers performed stand-up comedy for the excited crowd and touched on a variety of subjects. He started the night by announcing he had heard that Ohio University was the No. 1 party school in the country. After the crowd erupted into cheers, he told the audience not to be too proud of the title.

“Don’t cheer that. This is college,” Meyers said. “It can happen accidentally, but don’t celebrate it.”

Meyers gave OU students in the audience another round of advice as he was leaving the stage, telling the crowd to make sure to attend classes.

Meyers’ set included jokes about his time in Amsterdam, people spending time abroad in general, his performance at the White House correspondents’ dinner and a series of “Weekend Update” jokes that did not make it past the censors onto Saturday Night Live.

“I thought it was really funny,” said Lindsay Citraro, a sophomore studying creative writing. “When he told the extra stuff that didn’t make it into ‘Weekend Update,’ that was really unique.”

Meyers said stand-up gives him a chance to perform material that might not be SNL-sketch worthy.

“Sometimes things happen where you’re like ‘Oh, that would make a really good sketch’ and you start working on it and you’re like ‘It’s not really enough to make a good sketch, but maybe it is enough for a minute of stand-up,’” Meyers said. “So stand-up for me has been this really nice place to put other things that kind of don’t fit into the format of the show.”

Although many people in the audience were initially drawn to the show based on Meyers’ SNL fame, his stand-up kept the crowd laughing during the one-hour show.

“It was awesome. It was so funny,” said Jason Tingley, a sophomore studying forensic chemistry. “With the traveling jokes, it was like ‘I can relate to everything you just said.’”

Audience members were pleased with the event, and Jordan Brogley-Webb, a sophomore studying journalism, said she had a great time at the show and particularly enjoyed the ‘Weekend Update’-style jokes Meyers told.

“Seth was really funny. There was no break from laughing the entire time,” she said. “It was great. Everything I expected and more.”
