Sorority-sponsored dance competition to benefit diabetes research, education

On Tuesday, Alpha Gamma Delta will put its own spin on the popular Fox series So You Think You Can Dance at 7 p.m. in Baker University Center Ballroom.

Organizations competing for the dance title include Delta Zeta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Alpha Xi Delta and Phi Delta Theta. Each registered organization paid $75 to enter, which will benefit the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, a foundation that promotes sisterhood and leadership.

The foundation will be donating all proceeds to fund diabetes research and education.

“Our fundraising goal for this year is $900, which is $100 more than we raised last year,” said Danielle Cardarelli, a junior studying exercise physiology and the Alpha Gamma Delta philanthropy chair.

Judging the event will be Dr. Jay Shubrook, director of the diabetes center at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine; Charlene Kopchick, OU assistant dean of students; and Faith Kovachik, a senior studying health administration and a senior on the Ohio dance team.

The competition will include only one round for each organization to perform a routine, Cardarelli said. After each performance, the judges will score the organizations on creativity, dance unity, entertainment value and crowd support.

The group with the highest overall score will receive $75 to donate to their organization’s charity of choice.

Additionally, an audience choice award will be given to the group that has the most donations. The donations will be collected in a bucket that will be passed among audience members after each performance.

The donations collected for the audience choice award will benefit the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation.

“This dance competition is not only a fun way to get involved with your organization, but the proceeds will go to a good cause, which is diabetes,” Cardarelli said.
