Track & Field: Bobcats head to MAC Championships affter strong season finish

The Bobcats finished strong in their final stretch of the indoor regular season at the Ohio State University Tune-Up on Friday.

With 28 top-ten finishes, many Bobcats pushed past their personal and seasonal best records. Ohio coach Clay Calkins said he was impressed, especially with the field events, which had many marks fall over the weekend.

A trio of shot-put throwers placed in the top five for Ohio. Janiece Rose, Donyelle Brown and Kristen Mason finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Rose's throw of 13.35 meters was the best throw for the team this indoor season.

Mason also gave a season-best in weight throw and took fourth. Brown finished behind her in sixth with another personal record.

Jaimie Cavinee cleared 3.05 meters in the pole volt and placed fourth while teammates Jamie Fisher and Rachel Arnott also finished in the top ten.

Alexis Geiger jumped 5.53 meters in the long jump to take eighth. Serena Warner, Chanda Cuckler and Brittany Tyree each placed in the top ten for the high jump.

"This meet set us up well for the (Mid-American Conference Championships)," throws coach Nick Pero said. "We're in the mix even better now than we were before this meet."

The trend continued in the track events.

Distance runner Melissa Thompson won the 1,000-meter run at a time of 2 minutes and 59.25 seconds and teammate Brianna Shaw finished in fourth.

Erin Gale and Delaney Bolger placed second and third, respectively, in the 800-meter run with Bolger setting a personal record at 2 minutes and 23.23 seconds.

Geiger ran Ohio's season-best in the 60-meter dash with 8.11 seconds and added a personal record in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.41 seconds. Danielle Winningham also took the team's top mark for the season in the 400-meter run with fourth place at 59.19 seconds.

"We need to key in on our strong events to get ready for MACs," Calkins said. "There's no special plays or anything, just straight-up performances we are working on for the next weekend."

The Bobcats will travel to Akron for the MAC Championships Friday and Saturday.
