Valentine's Day event to bring relationship advice to a simmer with guest author

One of the most common languages throughout the world is the language of food, which is why Anthony Rucker, author of The Relationship Cookbook, uses it to show how to cook up the best relationship.

During his college years, Rucker tutored in math and science, but when students had difficulty, Rucker found that making food analogies helped.

After changing his major from math to psychology, Rucker found a new passion for relationships, so when someone proposed he write a book, Rucker decided to write about relationships.

“When I was thinking about how to put this book together, I remembered how well the food concept went over in my tutoring years,” Rucker said. “Everyone likes to eat and has eaten, so using food to teach the principles of relationships seemed like a concept everyone could understand.”

When Divine Covering, a multi-cultural religious student organization, was searching for a speaker for its third-annual Bringing Chivalry Back event, Rucker was a good choice.

“We voted on choosing him as our speaker,” said Ebony Porter, treasurer for Divine Covering and a fifth-year senior studying marketing. “We asked him questions about his Christian beliefs. We wanted to make sure he was what we had in mind for this event.”

The Bringing Chivalry Back event has been scheduled near Valentine’s Day in large part because of its romantic subject.

“We have this event around Valentine’s Day because dating and trying to have a relationship on a college campus can be difficult to deal with,” said Andrew Fowler, president of Divine Covering and a junior studying broadcast journalism.

Unlike past Bringing Chivalry Back events, this year’s is one day — not two — and features one speaker rather than a Christian couple discussing their relationship. The concept is still the same, though, Porter said.

“We are bringing in a relationship expert who will facilitate the topics of discussion,” she said.

Porter said that the event will be an eye-opening experience for some college students.

“It’s going to allow peoples to discuss relationship issues and learn about how times are affecting African-American relationships and college relationships in general,” she said.
