9 commissioner candidates vying to fill 2 available seats

With nine people competing for two seats as Athens County commissioner, Tuesday’s primary election will narrow the field to a maximum of four candidates for November’s general election.

After charges of domestic violence and allegations of illegal drug possession in the past year, incumbent Mark Sullivan is facing four Democratic challengers in Tuesday’s primary.

Sullivan’s challengers are Chris Chmiel, Mike O’Brien, Robert Baughman and Paul “Smoke” Barrett.

Republican write-in Randy Mace will also be fighting for a chance to duke it out in November. As a write-in candidate, Mace needs at least 50 votes to have his name on the ballot in the general election, but if he fails to acquire these votes, the Democrat who pulls the most votes in the primary will run unopposed.

Republican incumbent Larry Payne will run unopposed in Tuesday’s primary.

Democrats Charlie R. Adkins and Gary Edwards will be competing for the chance to run against Payne.
