The Ohio baseball team got off to a slow start, but its bats came alive later in the weekend as it won two of four games to improve to 3-7 on the season.
On Friday, the Bobcats lost 4-1 to the Davidson Wildcats. Junior Seth Streich gave up four runs in eight innings on the mound. He walked five batters and hit three, but he also finished with a career-high nine strikeouts.
Ohio won both games of its Saturday doubleheader against Presbyterian and Davidson. Senior Brent Choban pitched very effectively for Ohio, completing eight scoreless innings to pick up the win in an 8-1 victory against the Blue Hose. The Bobcats helped Choban with run support by scoring five runs in the first three innings.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Ohio came from behind to defeat Davidson 7-6 in 10 innings. Ohio rallied to send the game to extra innings after being down 5-2 through six innings.
Senior Jason Moulton pitched 3-1/3 innings and gave up two runs on six hits. Sophomore Tyler Stage got the win for Ohio, as he pitched three scoreless innings in relief. Sophomore catcher Kyle Dean had four hits in the doubleheader, en route to a five-RBI day.
On Sunday, Ohio closed out the tournament with an 11-10 loss against Presbyterian in 14 innings. Freshman Nick Plys started for the Bobcats and gave up four runs through 2-1/3 innings, but he allowed just one earned run.
The Bobcats gave up a two-run home run in the bottom of the 14th inning after taking a one-run lead in the top half of that inning.
Ohio coach Joe Carbone said that, despite the split, he thought his team’s pitching performance was all right.
Carbone said his team played hard and that it was evident this weekend despite the split.
“We’re very capable of playing good baseball, so we’ve just got to go out and be more consistent,” he said. “That’s what we’ve got to do.”
Carbone also said the team is getting better and that the early part of the season is a process for the team.
The Bobcats have a quick turnaround from Sunday and will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on West Virginia State.
