Baseball: Bobcats batting for weekend wins after striking out against Blue Raiders

The Bobcats will try to get back in the win column this weekend after being swept by Middle Tennessee State last weekend.

Ohio will play Davidson and Presbyterian at the Davidson Tournament Friday through Sunday.

The Bobcats will take on Davidson Friday before a split doubleheader against the two teams Saturday. Ohio will close out the tournament Sunday against Presbyterian.

Davidson was coming off back-to-back wins against Lehigh and Fairleigh Dickinson before its last game was rained out.

Presbyterian is still searching for its first win this season, after dropping its first eight games.

Despite Presbyterian’s winless streak, freshman first baseman Jake Madsen said the Bobcats aren’t taking the Blue Hose lightly.

“We’ve got to treat every game the same way,” he said. “You can’t take anybody lightly, just got to get them when their down and keep them down.”

Ohio coach Joe Carbone said the pitching rotation would consist of Seth Streich on Friday, Brent Choban for the first game of the doubleheader Saturday, Jason Moulton for the second game of the doubleheader, and freshman Nick Plys on Sunday.

Carbone said Ohio will be challenged this weekend and that the team has made some swing adjustments to improve its play.

“I think our swings are getting better. We made some adjustments with some guys after looking at the video and some major adjustments with a bunch of guys,” Carbone said. “I think it’s helping them. We’ve just got to get used to that now.”

Carbone said he is still figuring out a lineup but that some major questions have been answered.

Despite the slow start, Madsen said he is not concerned about the direction of the team.

Madsen ranks second on the team behind Streich with a .375 batting average and on-base percentage better than .400.

He said the Bobcats need to work on waiting for a good fastball to hit instead of jumping on what the pitcher wants them to hit.

“I think we have a lot of talent and a lot of good players on the team. We’re just off to a slow start,” Madsen said.  “I think we’re going to turn it around. We’ll be fine.”
