BEHIND THE SCENES | Post Modern

Every Thursday, The Post runs a full-page, in-depth, graphic-heavy feature called Post Modern. With just one story and (usually) no advertisements to work with, this page is a totally blank canvas. While this freedom is exciting, having infinite options can also be a little overwhelming and challenging for a designer. The way the story is told and the way the page is presented is entirely up to the designer's interpretation.

Usually what happens with this kind of opportunity is a lot of sketching and a lot of versions. In the end, of course, only one option can run, even if there are other solutions that could be just as sucessful.

Today's Post Modern, designed by Ashley Cappellazzi, is an example of one of those times where a designer must choose between a variety of different layouts that could all work and eventually decide on the one that tells the story best. Here are a few of the other versions she designed, in different stages of completion, before finally deciding on the version that was printed today.

And here is the final version that ran today:

In the end, this last version that ran seemed to have a more dynamic relationship between elements, with nothing feeling out of place.
