Faculty Senate to finish off quarter with 7 resolutions

Although both Ohio University President Roderick McDavis and Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit will not be in attendance for Monday night’s faculty senate, a resolution-filled agenda focused on faculty classifications and benefits will lead the meeting.

A total of seven resolutions are on the agenda, with two scheduled for vote and five up for discussion.

Stephen Golding, vice president for Finance and Administration, will start the meeting with a Q&A, said Faculty Senate Chair Joe McLaughlin. There will then be an initial report from a “fracking” committee regarding upcoming forums discussing hydraulic fracturing, a practice that extracts natural gas from underground and has raised questions of water contamination and other environmental concerns.

McLaughlin said he expects the majority of discussion to result from the first reading of a resolution regarding the role of Group II faculty and the possibility of establishing multi-year contracts for them; right now, OU offers only one-year contracts for Group II Faculty members.

“It’s more of a moral issue of treating equally,” McLaughlin said. “Right now, it says Group II faculty are part time, but we want to establish the fact that some of these people are full time.”

A suggestion from faculty to increase healthcare premiums from 10 percent to 15 percent is also expected to stir up a big discussion, McLaughlin said.

The two resolutions scheduled for a vote relate to wording changes for the quarters-to-semesters switch, including graduate catalog requirements and the two-hour rule for teachers dropping students from their course.

Faculty Senate will meet at 7:10 p.m. Monday in 235 Walter Hall.
