Music festival brings family fun to the hills

For many Ohio University students, Spring Quarter means festivals and countless hours outside, and this weekend, students and families alike can kick off the festival season with Hookah in the Hills.

A family festival for all ages and backgrounds, Hookah in the Hills brings together a mix of bands, music, camping and food for a weekend of live music.

The music festival, in its 14th year, will be held at Poston Lake Music Park, approximately 10 miles east of Athens. This year will feature two stages on the 35-acre music venue.

“This festival is expected to be the best one thus far because we expect 1,500 to 2,000 people throughout the weekend,” said Curtis Manley, CEO of Big Events Presents, Inc, the festival sponsor.

“We have two main stages with bands back-to-back, such as Skeetones and Under the Sun,” he added.

Among the bands performing at the festival is ekoostik hookah, who make an appearance every year and will perform Friday and Saturday. The band is celebrating its 21st year as a full-time band with roots in Columbus.

While the festival is known for its more folksy music such as ekoostik hookah, Manley said there is usually something for everyone.

“The Hookah in the Hills has a variety of bands with different musical influences for every person,” Manley said. “For us to get The Werks and Rumpke Mountain Boys, the festival will likely draw people from Pennsylvania, Kentucky and West Virginia because these bands have resonated with people across the country.”

In addition to the ongoing music throughout the day, Manley said there will be a variety of activities for children as well.

“We will have a designated kid’s tent with organized activities to keep children busy throughout the weekend with things such as an Easter egg hunt and kids’ parade,” Manley said. “For those who want to camp, there will be parking and camping on a first come, first serve basis.”

The family aspect of the weekend, Manley said, is what he finds to be the festival’s strongest attribute.

“This festival has a staff comprised of close family and friends who give a personal and convenient experience for performers and attendees,” he said. “We really try to hire smiling faces, such as my mom and dad, who work as greeters because it sets the tone for the weekend.”
