OU extends deadline for student-trustee applications after only 8 apply

A month of reminder tweets by the Ohio University student trustees all led up to Monday — the final deadline for turning in applications to be the next student trustee — but the social-media push didn’t generate as many interested applicants as expected.

Eight students turned in an application for the student-trustee position, said Roger Jones, vice president of Student Senate. The deadline for applications has been extended.

“The number (of applications) I would like to see is more than 10 — at least more than 10,” Jones said before the applications were due. “It would be nice to get in that 12-to-15 range.”

Jones also chairs a committee formed during Fall Quarter to review the applications, interview the candidates and select five finalists to pass on to OU President Roderick McDavis. The finalists are then passed on to Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who will appoint one of the finalists to the position.

Although there are more than five applicants, Student Senate will try to get more applications so that, if some are eliminated before or during the interview process, there will still be enough to select five finalists, Jones said.

“All we would do is extend the deadline and then advertise that the deadline is extended,” he said. “We can extend it until Friday of this week … and then we still have spring break to review the applications.”

The committee consists of Jones; current Student Trustees Danielle Parker and Allison Arnold; Student Senate President Kyle Triplett; Graduate Student Senate President Tracy Kelly; Student Senate Chief of Staff Shawn Silvis; and Student Senate members Amrit Saini, Sean Martin and Andrew Wade.

Vice President for Student Affairs Kent Smith will also sit on the committee to oversee the selection procedure, bringing the number of committee members to 10.

The student trustee will replace Parker, whose term ends this year.

Triplett had prior experience as a student trustee before becoming Student Senate president.

“My favorite thing about (serving as a student trustee) was just interacting with the other board members and seeing their love for the university,” Triplett said in a previous Post article.
