The Pick of the Week for Spring Quarter week 1 was a difficult choice. This first week featured especially strong design solutions from cover to cover. The final decision came down to Friday's front page design for the story "Goodbye, Groce," designed by Jake Newton.

This front page won out because it best exemplified how collaboration improves the end product. While we had a lot of teamwork going on between writers, editors, designers and photographers all week long, Friday's paper pulled off a sensitive and aesthetically pleasing presentation with just an AP photo to work with.
This front proves that you can still make a great page even without a staff photo or graphic to carry it. The page also utilized design elements that don't get used very often, such as reverse type and type on a photo. Together, the package turned out to be very powerful.
Design "Pick of the Week" is chosen by The Post design editor and highlights a graphic and/or page layout each week. Check back for more next Friday!
