While sports photos and sports stories tend to be especially strong, they come along pretty regularly and it is sometimes difficult to figure out how to display them in a way that is new and different. An example of a dynamic, fresh solution to that problem is the Pick of the Week for Week 9-- the front page of Monday's paper, designed by Ashley Cappellazzi.

The daring photo cutout and use of white space creates a visually interesting relationship between the elements on the page. The direction of the photo also helps the reader's eye flow to the score and headline, and into the story. The design could easily have run as two photos in traditional sizes, but the way that the cutout and the crowd shot are paired brought more energy to the page and was a nice change from the ordinary.
Design "Pick of the Week" is chosen by The Post design editors and highlights a graphic and/or page layout each week. Check back for more next Friday!
