Social media site designed especially for events

There’s a new kid on the block in the social media world, one that seeks to capture life’s shared experiences in one place.

Called Capsule, the website and mobile app serves as a platform to create group event sharing and streamline the event-planning process.

The idea came after co-founders Cyrus Farudi and Omri Cohen had over 15 bachelor, wedding or birthday parties to go to between the two of them in one year.

“We just realized that there was nothing out there that made sense,” Farudi said.

Instead of using 10 different services to manage group events, Capsule attempts to serve as a one-stop shop to streamline and centralize events, Farudi said. It focuses on the four stages of an event life cycle: before, during, after and the archive stage.

“I think what differentiates us is just the fact that we’re focused on that life cycle management issue so we’ve built things in to manage everything,” Farudi said.

Users create events, invite their friends and then can communicate via Capsule. The network allows all members of the group to mass text, email and even use the mobile app Capsulecam to upload photos directly for all group members to see.

“With our mobile app you can take photos and then they all go into the capsule and it’s like a shared group perspective,” said employee Saul Artiga, a sophomore studying English.

Though Facebook dominates the market, Capsule has the advantage of privacy, Artiga said, because “you can still share everything without risk.”

According to feedback the creators have received, the privacy aspect resonates with college students in particular, said Farudi.\

Like most social media sites, Capsule grows through users creating events and inviting others. For some events, this means large amounts of new users signing on in just one day.

“The other day we had somebody in Bulgaria and they had an event and added like, 900 people,” Artiga said.

The Capsule team may be small with just four full-time employees, including lead designer Ryan Schmidt from Akron, but it is enthusiastic as the platform continues to grow.

“I eat, sleep and breathe Capsule,” Schmidt said. “My parents use it, my friends use it —everyone I know uses it.”
