Speaking Bobcats take home first prize at national invitation tournament

In the same night the Ohio University men’s basketball team advanced in the NCAA tournament, the forensics team brought home a win of its own.

The OU Speaking Bobcats won a national title at the Pi Kappa Delta national comprehensive tournament in Overland Park, Kansas last night, said team coach and university director of forensics Dan West.

The tournament featured both speech and debate categories, and the team brought home a first and second prize in those categories, respectively, all while earning the national first place prize overall.

Several Speaking Bobcats put on impressive performances of their own, snagging 7 individual first place national awards.

The event is much like a national invitation for track and field, said West, with many separate event awards as well as overall team awards.

“It’s fantastic,” said West. “We won this tournament two years ago and it was great to repeat.”

The Bobcats are currently first in the Pi Kappa Delta rankings, a national honorary society that values the “art of persuasion,” according to its website.
