Columbus medical campus approved by OU Board of Trustees

By the time Ohio University’s current freshman are seniors they will have seen the first class of medical students sporting Columbus addresses.

OU’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted Friday in favor of OU’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine’s $11 million land purchase. The purchase will secure 15 acres to go toward a regional extension campus in Dublin, Ohio.

Located at 7001-7003 Post Road, the Dublin campus is expected to enroll 50 students in fall 2014.

“Dean Brose has led the way and now we’re able to see these kinds of results,” said OU President Roderick McDavis at a Thursday meeting. “This has placed the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine on firm financial footing.”

The Dublin land purchase also includes two buildings that currently house offices.

The building that currently sits on 7003 will be renovated immediately to host OU-HCOM classes. The current tenants’ leases will expire by the move-in date and they have been made aware of OU-HCOM’s future intentions, said Donna Goss, OU’s director of engagement and real estate.

The building at 7001 will continue to house offices on the upper floors until 2017 when the leases expire.

A shed also located on the property might be used as an anatomy lab to continue OU-HCOM’s willed body program in Dublin, said OU-HCOM Dean Jack Brose.

Dublin City Council will vote Monday to give the university an additional 75 acres that surround the OU-HCOM property.

OU-HCOM has partnered with several entities in the Dublin area to gain access to resources, including OhioHealth, Ohio State University, Mount Carmel and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

“They said they will supply necessary rotations for our campus in central Ohio and develop new residency programs with the intent of training primary care physicians,” Brose said.
