Comedian captures spotlight in MemAud

Although seats were empty Friday night at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, comedian Nick Kroll was able to fill the room with constant laughs and giggles.

“I thought he was incredibly funny,” said Emily Dudd, an Athens resident who attended the show.

Kroll first graced the stage with T-shirts from different organizations on campus, including Race for a Reason.  He also made various “announcements” for the school, proceeding to state that many of the spring fests were canceled for a variety of reasons.

And, like most celebrities who have visited OU this year, Kroll touched on the party-school ranking.

“So, you guys are the No. 1 party school,” Kroll said. “I bet that is great for job interviews.”

Although Kroll improvised large parts of his set, Joe Mande, a comedian already familiar with the OU stage after performing with Aziz Ansari, seemed a bit more scripted.

“I liked the video (Mande showed) and Joe Mande himself; I thought it was so funny,” said Shelby Sams, a freshman studying sociology and criminology.

After Mande finished his 30-minute stand-up set, Kroll took back the spotlight ready for action.

“I just thought they were so funny,” said Andy Dudd, an Athens resident. “Especially Kroll in the second part. I think he just (improvised most of it), which made it even better.”

By the end of the night, Kroll was laughing along with the crowd as he offered to answer any questions the audience might have. The discussion resulted in a comparison of bars on Court Street, a plea for the Shiva Blast (courtesy of his hit show The League) and a query regarding the comedian’s now infamous soiled pants.

“Did you keep them?” an audience member asked. Kroll smiled, “Of course.”

As the comedian prepared to leave the stage, he was graced with a round of boisterous applause.

“I know it’s 4/20 and everything, so I thank you guys for coming out,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”
